Matupit Island

Located directly across the bay from the active Tavuvur Volcano, Matupit Island boasts a population of 200 to 300 people, many have resettled throughout the East New Britain Province following the catastrophic Tavuvur eruptions of 1994.

In 1976, a German Trading Store was established on the island where there is still remnants of the wharf and collating terminal. The German flag was then raised on the island in 1884, 26 years before the township of Rabaul was built.

On arrival you will be greeted by the islanders with frangipani leis and will be taken through the village stopping by the local schools, church and craft market. Visitors will see how island life is today and be treated to a performance of traditional dancing and singing. You can see firsthand the importance of the coconut for food, shelter, cooking, medicinal purposes and weaving.
